When Governance Starts Getting in the Way
Even committed school boards can struggle when expectations are unclear, responsibilities overlap, or governance starts pulling attention away from the work that matters most.
You may recognize some of these signs:
- Board meetings keep drifting into operational details.
- The Head of School spends too much time managing board concerns instead of leading the school.
- Trustees are unsure where their responsibility begins and ends.
- Important conversations take longer than they should or fail to lead to clear decisions.
- Board and leadership expectations do not always match.
- Everyone wants the school to move forward, but governance friction keeps slowing progress.
The problem is not always a lack of policies or good intentions. Often, it is a lack of shared understanding about how the board and Head of School are meant to work together.
Turn Governance Friction Into Focus
This half-day workshop gives your board and Head of School dedicated time to step back, examine how governance is working today, and gain a clearer understanding of what needs attention next, before confusion, wasted time, and unnecessary friction become bigger problems.
See Where Friction Is Costing You
Identify where governance is creating wasted time, repeated confusion, or unnecessary tension between the board and school leadership.
Clarify Who Owns What
Build a clearer understanding of the board’s role, the Head of School’s role, and how those responsibilities should work together without drifting into micromanagement.
Know What Needs Attention Next
Walk away knowing which governance issues deserve attention first, helping your board avoid wasted effort and continued friction.
A Modern Governance Model Trusted by School Leaders Nationwide
Built for the realities of today’s schools, Aligned Influence brings the board and executive into one shared governance framework.
Founded by Ken Schuetz, Aligned Influence helps school boards and leaders across the country gain greater clarity around their roles, responsibilities, and how they work together..
Ken’s Aligned Influence® Governance Model goes beyond policy to define the complementary roles of the board and executive, giving both sides a shared framework for stronger governance. In this model:
- The board directs the organization, and the executive leads it.
- The board protects the organization, and the executive manages it.
- The board enables the work of the organization, and the executive accomplishes it.
When both sides fulfill these complementary roles, boards can spend less time in the operational weeds, Heads of School have greater room to lead, and both sides can focus more clearly on the work that moves the school forward.
